Cook Islanders are being urged to turn out for a mass Covid-19 vaccination drive in South Auckland next week.

The drive-in will take place next Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Atiu Community Hall in Mangere.

The Director of Pacific Health at the Waitemata District Health Board says she wants to see a big increase in Covid-19 vaccinations among Cook Islanders in New Zealand.

Dr Aumea Herman says Cook Island residents have set a good example.

"Our target for coverage rates for the Cook Islands community is to try and hit the 95% or 96% because then we'll be on par with our Cook Islands people that are living back in the Cook Islands. They've hit 96%."

Doctor Herman will be attending the three-day event in Mangere and says last week's Tongan vaccination drive showed that people will show up.

"By Cook Islands, for Cook Islands. By Pacific, for Pacific. We know this works for our people and we just have to look at how the Tongans pulled together last weekend and it's like yes, we knew this was the option for us."
