Pacific Games Council to fund 12 athletes from countries taking part in 2022 Pacific Mini Games.

The Pacific Games Council will fund 12-athletes from every Pacific nation that takes part in the 2022 Pacific Mini Games.

It comes after Fiji said it would send a reduced team to the Games because of a lack of money.

The Pacific Games Council has about $200,000 to spend and its Executive Director Andrew Minogue says the money will provide everything the athletes need in order to take part in the games.

"We don't have a lot of money but we've put money aside to fund that cost for 12 athletes from each delegation and that will cost us somewhere in the order of $140,000 US dollars. We've made that commitment.”

He says: “That support's not just for those athletes but also supports the hosts in terms of making sure we get as many people to come to the games in their country as possible."

The Pacific Mini Games will be hosted in the Northern Mariana Islands in June 2022 and Minogue hopes the Pacific Governments will be able to financially support more athletes.

“We still need the Government to support the participation of their country and their athletes but we're trying to make a contribution as well from our end," says Minogue.
